Human beings are delicate creatures. Sometimes we encounter experiences that violate our sense of safety, order, and predictability to the point that we feel utterly overwhelmed, and unable to go on as before. This prevents us from living fully in the present moment. We call these shattering experiences trauma. No one is immune to them.
In trauma, the body’s alarm system turns on and then may have difficulty turning off. When this occurs, we experience the agony of never truly feeling relaxed, always on guard or scanning for threat or perceived threat. We cannot sleep. Worst of all, the body can become unpredictable, unreliable, and even “the enemy.”
The fortunate part is that we now know that we can intentionally intervene in the body’s own alarm systems and begin to turn them down. According to Dr Bessel van der Kolk, “Being able to find the words to allow you to know what happened and being able to place the memory in space and time, liberates a person from tyranny of having to relive the trauma in the present. But only if the past can be remembered without being forced to relive what happened can one truly speak of recovery”.
